Valentine’s! What a beautiful word. With love and kindness in the air, what’s there not to like about the magical day? But, let’s just take a step back and trace it back to its history. Every February 14, across the United States (and in other places around the world) candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious Saint, and where did these traditions come from?

One story about the history of Saint Valentine suggests he may have been killed for trying to help Christians escape being tortured harsh Roman prisons.  According to the legend, an imprisoned Valentine sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still used today. Isn’t that romantic? But, that isn’t all there is to Valentine’s Day. Not even close. If there is anything more important about Valentine’s Day in today’s world, it is the idea of spreading kindness and love. And that means, even if you don’t have that special someone on that special day, it doesn’t matter! What’s most important is that you get to share kindness and love with people you see, even if you don’t know them.

And so, we celebrate Valentine’s Day knowing that maybe it’s about much more than celebrating love with one person. And THAT is what keeps this special day going, and our lives going. So, just know, whenever you can do something kind, it’s your job to do it. And, remember, that when you’re spreading love and kindness, you’re doing something that will make a person smile.

Happy Valentine’s Cougars, and don’t eat too many chocolates!
