The Kindness of Coronavirus

Jasmin R, Author

Right now, it may seem that the rain is everlasting. It may seem that thunder is in the sky, that grief is overwhelming our hearts, and that loneliness is lingering above us. It may seem. However, as you may know, perception isn’t always accurate. It may seem as though it’s real and true, but sometimes it’s far from it. I am a person that had to learn that the hard way; through trial and error. Like some of you, I’ve gone through a lot in my life. Good, bad, and sometimes in the middle. However, never have I ever seen something like this. And I have no idea what to think of it. I feel lost.

I feel as though I am in the middle of a ginormous maze. I feel as though I can’t get out, trapped inside a problem. I don’t know what’s going on or how long it’s going to go on for. I am scared. But you know what the good thing about being stuck in a maze is? There is, indeed, always a way out.

There are twists and turns, and it may take long, but when you get out of a maze, you feel proud. You’ve accomplished something, and more importantly, you beat it. Now, with our current situation, it’s no different. We’re stuck at home and we feel alone, but it’s not forever, and just like the maze, once we get out, we’ll be stronger than ever.

After all, we’re human! We depend on other humans! That’s simply the way we are. Social distancing may mean that we have to be physically separated for the time being, but it doesn’t  mean that we have to be separated in our hearts. We are all in this together. Not only as a school, but also as a community, city, country, and planet. And although the virus we are battling is incredibly strong, the power of incredible people is stronger.

So looking back, not only have I experienced a lot in my life, but so have you. And so has that person over there, the one next to him, and the one next to her. Mankind has experienced so much. But we’ve never overcome anything alone. Everything in the history of mankind has involved people doing things together. This is no exception.

Right now is a time of reflection. It’s a time to be with your loved ones. It’s a time to make an impact. It’s a time for change. When you look outside, the ocean is cleaner, less cars are on the streets, animals are thriving, pollution levels are being controlled, and people who deserve it most are finally getting the praise they’ve never truly earned.

We’re definitely not at the end of the maze. We might not be for a little while longer. But we will get out of it, and from the looks of it, we’ll get out of it stronger than we have ever been before. And that’s because of all of us. Our kindness does shine through.

After all, people always say that a little bit of kindness can change the world. I would say that’s true. Wouldn’t you?
