Hey Cougars! I got to interview Mrs. Calhoun to find out more about Laura Cushman and I did! Laura Cushman was all about the kids, and her decisions were always based on what was best for the kids. She was born on November 1st 1886 in Iowa and died on  April 19th 1986 Miami, FL at age 99. She was the principal of Cushman for 53 years and in all of Cushman history there have only been 3 heads of school, Dr. Cushman, Dr. Lutton, and Mrs. Balseiro. So running the school 53 years was a really big deal.

Before starting Cushman, Laura Cushman taught Kindergarten in a public school. But, the school went under because of a budget crisis, so the school cut Kindergarten. But the parents wanted to have Laura Cushman has a teacher so they convinced her to make a school. Her first kindergarten class was taught on her front porch in Morningside (that is owned now by Mr. Soyka.) The faculty meetings used to have hot tea served in beautiful tea cups! It was a personal touch that would be reflected in everything she would do at Cushman. Lucky for us what she started is still here, hopefully it will carry on.  I think that will close up this article! See you soon Cougars!!

I really enjoyed hearing Emily Estefan speak at the Founder’s Day assembly. Her words of wisdom were touching to hear. It’s amazing how one woman can affect so many people and create positivity in the world, a chain effect! We are all a part of Dr. Cushman’s vision and we live our lives with courtesy, industry, and responsibility. Great article Jalen!

If you had used a more recent picture, like the 1950″s, maybe it would have me in it. Mrs. Sibley was an interim principal before Dr. Lutton. She was Dr. Cushman’s assistant principal for many years. Very nice article.
